Yield:   About 5 cups of pizza sauce
Cook Time:   1 hour
Tips:   Pizza Sauce can be made in advance and stored in freezer in one or more air-tight containers (see recipe directions).
Suggestion:   Delicious on homemade pizza dough or store-bought pizza dough.
Ingredients
  • 2 15-oz. cans tomato sauce
  • 1 12-oz. can tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons fennel seed, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
In a large saucepan, combine tomato sauce and tomato paste. Add Italian seasoning, oregano, fennel seed, onion powder, garlic powder and salt and stir until thoroughly combined. Bring sauce to a boil, stirring constantly. Once mixture comes to a boil, immediately reduce heat to low, then cover and simmer for 1
hour, stirring occasionally. After an hour of simmering, remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

Once sauce has cooled to room temperature, spread desired amount of pizza sauce on prepared homemade pizza dough or store-bought pizza dough.

If you prefer to make this sauce in advance and use later, simply transfer sauce to one or more air-tight freezer containers, leaving at least one-half inch of space between top of sauce and container lid. (Note: Store sauce in one container if you plan If you plan to use all of the pizza sauce at once. Divide sauce into 3 portions and store each portion in separate containers if you plan to make one pizza at a time.) Any unused pizza sauce can be re-frozen. When ready to use, thaw out overnight in refrigerator or at room temperature until it resumes its liquid form.

About 1-1/3 cups of sauce will usually cover a 12-inch pizza or 15x10-inch pan pizza, though you can apply sauce sparingly or liberally, depending on personal preference.
