Yield: 16 servings
Cook Time: 30-35 minutes
Tips: 1/2 cup of chopped nuts and/or semi-sweet chocolate chips may stirred into the batter just before baking, if desired.
Suggestion: Delicious topped with a dollop whipped cream or served with a scoop of ice cream.
Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan
(using nonstick spray or butter).
In a medium
mixing bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
In an
electric mixer bowl, combine brown sugar and butter and beat at medium speed until smooth and fluffy. Add eggs and mix again until blended. Add apple sauce and vanilla extract and mix again until blended. Add flour mixture, a little at a time, mixing on low speed until thoroughly blended. Remove mixer bowl and manually stir in nuts and/or chocolate chips (if using). Pour batter into prepared baking pan.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick insert into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool, then cut into squares.
